It’s officially cold and flu season. I’m a nurse and I’m a mommy of a preschooler, so when cold and flu season rolls around I have a stash of my favorite go-to products when the colds inevitably roll through our home. First off, let me say, we all get our flu shots! Flu shots do not protect against the common cold, so we have our fair share. Again, my little is 3 years old and attends full day preschool 5 days a week, so runny noses are just a way of life during the colder months. Here is a collection of my Mommy Must Haves for Cold and Flu Season.
I’m not a huge medication person, we do vaccines, flu shots, etc. but I’m slow to take cough and cold medications for myself. However, Zarbee’s Naturals Children’s Cough Syrup + Mucus with Dark Honey is a staple in my medicine cabinet. This was one of the very first ‘medications’ I tried when my little one was sick for the first time. I picked it because there’s no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial sweeteners or colors and pretty much uses natural ingredients to help soothe cold symptoms. I also picked up the Zarbee’s Naturals Children’s Cough Syrup with Dark Honey Nighttime because it was buy one get one 1/2 off and let me say, it works wonders! The nighttime medications really helps my little one fall and stay asleep when she’s not feeling well. I highly recommend both products as a mom who has used them with great results.
I also keep children’s tylenol and children’s Motrin on hand for high fevers, I’m pretty tolerant of low grade fevers because the fever means the body is fighting against the invader and I let it ride until the fever starts to affect my little one’s mood and spirits. If she’s okay, playing and generally feeling okay – I leave her alone. Once she starts slowing down, I treat the fever. Who wants to watch their little one struggling? Not me. Mommy Tip: I mix the medication with a little juice and let her sip with a coffee stirrer. She finishes it all and loves to use her ‘tiny straw’.
My next must have for this time of year is Boogie Wipes! I go for the unscented Boogie Wipes just to keep the potential irritants to a minimum. These are heavy weight saline wipes for the nose, they are more gentle than regular tissues and the saline easily cleans the area around the nose and get’s any hard boogies out with ease. I keep a pack of these everywhere! In the car, her bookbag, my purse, I love them!
Another must have is our scent Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser, it’s a MUST HAVE for us. I use it in my little ones bedroom to put some nasal clearing eucalyptus scent in the air, I put a pillow under the head of her toddler bed mattress to elevate her head a little bit and she sleeps very well for being sick. I love it so much I got one for our bedroom, her bedroom and our main living space. I find that it helps just as much if not more than our humidifier which is also a must have. Using essentials oils have become a big part of our lives, we use essential oils tons of different ways. Here is a link to a great starter set of oils, Art Naturals Top 16 Pure Essential Oils – Peppermint, Tee Tree, Rosemary, Orange, Lemongrass, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Patchouli, Pine Tree, Lime, Grapefruit, Cinnamon, Bergamot & Tangerine.
Also, another thing worth noting is that I carry tons of PURELL Sanitizing Hand Wipes in my purse. You can find them on Amazon.com, a box of 300 individually wrapped wipes. Another great item to keep are On the Go Lysol Disinfecting Wipes. Wipe down anything your little one will be touching, like that yucky supermarket cart handle!
Wash those hands as much as you can and stay well friends!
