Let me just start off by saying if you are uncomfortable relaxing your hair at home, then don’t do it. Simple as that, but if you do it all the time or you feel comfortable doing it then by all means, carry on. I have to admit that I’m not loyal to one brand of relaxer, I’m always trying to find the next best thing. The one thing I stick with is no-lye, I’ve pretty much always used a no-lye relaxer and I haven’t had any issues to date so why mess with it. Now with that being said I was on the hunt for a relaxer kit and of course the drugstore has a limited variety, but I spotted the Dark & Lovely Healthy Gloss 5 Shea Moisture Relaxer kit. What originally caught my eye, was the fact that it comes in 3 different variations – regular, super, and color-treated. Even though my hair is not color treated I thought it was cool to find a product that is actually meant for color-treated hair. Anyway, I went with the regular strength.
The relaxer kit comes with the typical items: instructions, cheap gloves, mixing stick, relaxer base, activator, neutralizing shampoo, conditioner, and a hair cream. I found that the star of this relaxer kit is the silk keratin serum, I’ll explain later.
So on to the actual process, I do a relaxer prep and then get to it. I just make sure I have everything I need on hand, including my own ‘real’ gloves, section my hair into 4 sections and then relax it. Onto the review, first things first mixing the activator into the relaxer base. Okay, in this kit the activator is in a packet that you rip open and then add to the relaxer base. It’s not the usual type that you pour in and the color changes letting you know that you’ve mixed it well enough. I wasn’t crazy about this type of mix, but I just mixed longer than I normally would have and kept it moving. Application was typical, nothing to report there. Once I was done here are where things got interesting.
The instructions say to rinse out thoroughly and then apply the Silk Keratin Serum to hair and wait 5 minutes. This is before you do the neutralizing shampoo. I have to admit, I was skeptical. I like to know I’ve gotten all the relaxer out of my hair before doing any “extras” but I followed the directions. After a very, very thorough rinse with the strongest setting my shower head would allow. I applied the Silk Keratin Serum to the entire length of my hair. Okay, so this step is the best step ever. My hair immediately felt as though it had just been deep treated, not like it had just been relaxed. This step softened my hair, I was able to comb it through root to tip with no issues. It helped detangle, condition, smooth, and treat all in one step. I wish they sold this item separately because I would buy it and use it more frequently and not just with relaxing. I think this is the step that made me love this relaxer kit. After waiting the recommended 5 minutes I rinsed and after rinsing it just reiterated the fact that the serum conditioned, strengthened, and treated my hair. At this point I knew I had to share my experience with this relaxer kit with you guys. Next, I used the neutralizing shampoo. I like the fact that it’s a color signaling neutralizer, meaning that if any relaxer is still in your hair the suds will be pink instead of white. The downside is that all I saw was a very very faint pink, so faint in fact, that I had to pull the shower curtain back to get more light to really see. I lathered and repeated like 3-4 times and still my hair wasn’t all stiff and hard feeling like it usually is at this stage in the relaxer process. Typically, it isn’t until I do my deep conditioning treatment at the end that my hair feels good, but with this relaxer kit – my hair felt good before, felt good after I applied the Silk Keratin Treatment, and kept feeling good all the way after it was styled. I had no issues what so ever with this relaxer kit. Still after the neutralizing shampoo, I used the conditioner that comes with the kit and left that on for the recommended 5 minutes. It was okay, nothing to elaborate on.
Overall, the Silk Keratin Serum is the star of this relaxer kit and YES, I will be using it again. It’s very high on my list on favorite at home relaxer kits.
