Just when you thought everything was going to be smooth sailing, enter Adult Acne. It’s like my skin just decided to go crazy later in life, saying “I was good to you during your high school and college years, I’m going to act a fool now!” So I forged my battle against adult acne treating it like the occasional breakout I had during my teenage years … BIG mistake. The salicylic acid did nothing for my skin and did not help with the breakouts like I had hoped. My adult acne slayer? Glycolic Acid. Not only did Glycolic acid make my skin smoother and clearer, it also helped with the dreaded dark marks … aka hyperpigmentation.
Adult Acne Weapon #1 MD Forte II Facial Cleanser. Way back when, my dermatologist suggested MD Forte I Facial Cleanser. It was just okay, then I didn’t feel as though it did much of anything for my skin. This time around I ordered the MD Forte II Facial Cleanser (Amazon.com $27.00) and I love it. The difference between I and II is the amount of Glycolic Acid. I began to see a difference much faster than I did when I was using the MD Forte I. I use a two step wash routine in the evenings, where I apply the cleanser to my face in the shower, let it sit while I wash the rest of my body and then rinse it off. Once I get out the of shower, I do another cleanse using my Clarisonic brush. The first wash gets off whatever makeup I wore and the second round gets down into my pore to clean. I think the key is allowing the cleanser to sit for a few to allow the glycolic acid to actually work.
The next weapon in my fight against adult acne is Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum. ($35.00 Amazon.com) This is awesome at lightening up any hyperpigmentation on my skin cause by acne. I love that it’s a serum because it easily sinks in and because it’s more concentrated it works faster for me than creams. I apply a thin layer to my entire face and I never spot treat because I don’t want to get the lighter ring around the dark spot known as a reverse halo.
Another all-star product to fight adult acne that I’ve been using is Alpha Hydrox 12% Glycolic AHA Souffle. ($16.99 Amazon.com) Not only does this product help smooth out my skins texture it also makes it feel smoother to the touch. It helps my skin turn over faster, which means it’s another good pick for ladies dealing with hyperpigmentation.
Then during the day I use a SPF 30 moisturizer and that’s pretty much it.
