So this summer I frequented the restaurant Above in South Orange whenever my friends wanted to grab a drink or have dinner. If you are familiar with South Orange, it’s right above the gourmet market Eden Marketplace if not it’s located in an area with plenty of available parking. Anyway, my favorite thing about Above is the outdoor seating areas, there’s not one but two different rooftop terraces. I’ve never gone on a Saturday, but whenever I have gone there was tons of outdoor space available so you don’t have to be right on top of who ever is sitting next to you.
One of the rooftop terraces is smoking so if cigars are your thing, that’s were you need to be, but I will say this – that area is smaller and it’s right next to the South Orange Train Station so it can get a little nosy.
Now on to the food, I’ve had the Stuffed Colossal Shrimp, Delmonico Steak, and the Lamb Shank – all of which were fabulous. The Delmonico steak is a la carte so be prepared to order a side, I had the sauteed spinach which was more than enough to share. As far as appetizers go, I’m so partial to calamari that I order it where ever I go!
Here it was okay, but the 3 different dipping sauces made up for the fact that it was just okay. I was surprised that I enjoyed the Fried Chicken Dumplings better than the calamari, but my favorite appetizer has got to be the Blue Bay Mussels that are simmered in a light pesto sauce with a touch of cream and served with grilled bread … YUM! The sushi is also worth noting, it was surprisingly tasty!
