Ashley Judd Makeup Mishap

Why is Ashley Judd hiding her face? Because underneath that book it looks like someone slapped her across her face with a big puff of white powder! Don't believe me? See for yourself!

Looks like she has fallen victim to the same thing that happened to these stars!

What's the deal? Beauty Geeks breaks it down for us, complete with a video! Head over and check it out and see what product to avoid!

Poolside Primping by Too Faced

This summer I plan on doing tons of Poolside Primping! That's when I spotted Too Faced Summer Collection, Poolside Primping I knew I had to share that and what I actually keep by my poolside lounge chair.

Too Faced Poolside Primping is a $105.00 value set for just $42.00. The set comes in a brown and pink striped bag featuring Deluxe Primp and Poreless SPF 20 Bronze Tint Face Primer, Glamour Lipgloss in Peek-a-boo, Black Lashgasm mascara, perfect lips lip liner, and Caribbean in a Compact in Sun Bunny. Fun to take along on a vacation and while fabulous products, these aren't exactly my poolside beauty picks.

Beauty Blvd.'s Pool Side Beauty Picks:

1. Sun block and lots of it! Just because we're brown girls doesn't mean we can't develop skin cancer. I'm on a never ending mission to find the most perfect sunblock for brown skin. My favorites from last year are Supergoop and Coola, because both will not make your skin turn that ghoolish shade of purple.

2. Water! Sitting out in the sun will make you sweat, replace your fluids with nice ice cold water.

3. Leonor Greyl Huile de Palme hair oil is a hair care staple for me at the poolside. Not only does it replace the moisture that's been stripped from my hair because of the chlorine, it can also be applied pre-dip to help block some of the chlorine from sinking into my hair. It's a win-win situation.

4. Chapstick with SPF - Don't forget the moisturize your lips and protect them from sunburn. What could be worse than sun burned lips? My favorite is BioCare Lip Treatment with SPF 20.

What are your poolside must haves?

Spring Scents for Home

I love candles and reed diffusers as they provide a wonderful fragrance to my home. Just like most women have a signature scent or two I think a home should have a scent as well. For Spring, I prefer light upbeat citrus scents to compliment the season.

Antica Farmacista Home Ambiance Diffusers are a great option to provide a light scent to smaller areas, like the bathroom, kitchen or your bedroom if it's smaller. A great option is Grapefruit because it's a single scent that works great with other scents if mixing and matching to create a unique scent is your thing.

Here's a tip: Visit your local Marshalls and find a beautiful glass to pour the scent into and then place the reeds in there. That way you have a beautiful custom look to compliment you scent!

Beaura Spa for Spa Week

I had the pleasure of visiting Beaura Spa for their Heat Infused Tranquility Massage. First, let me say this was my first massage ever. I always shied away from massages opting for facials and body scrubs because I thought I was too sensitive to massages. What a huge mistake, I've been missing out big time!

Beaura Spa is located within a plastic surgery center and has ample parking available. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the receptionist and the massage therapist, I had a seat and filled out a massage consent form. I, personally, really appreciate the massage consent form because it gives you the opportunity to let your massage therapist know if you have any medical problems, problem areas, or anything else like that. The space is beautiful, quiet, and smells great.

The Heat Infused Tranquility Massage is just $50.00 as a part of Spa Week! It was amazing, for 50 minutes I relaxed and enjoyed a full body rub down while heat stone packs warmed up my back. My massage therapist, Patty was very gentle and thorough. I was totally relaxed and for me that's a big deal. The massage room was decorated simply, with candles, a mirror, beautiful curtains, and of course a nice massage table. The music was great, I relaxed to a combination of Sade, New Age Spa Music, and I could have sworn I heard a little John Legend in there too.

The Heat Infused Tranquility Massage, not to be mistaken for a Hot Stone Massage this was more like a regular body massage with some heat added. The stones themselves never actually touched my skin, instead they were wrapped and placed on my back and then my stomach when I was lying on my back enjoying my massage. The massage is a $95.00 value that you can experience for yourself for just $50.00 - but book quickly because Spa Week is from April 11th-17th.

April Essence Covergirl Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson is looking amazing these days! So much so, I've joined Weight Watchers to get right for the summer! She looks amazing on the April 2011 cover of Essence, dressed in bright pinks, the fabulous Jennifer Hudson shows off her hard-earned new figure and bold manicure. The Oscar and Grammy winner rocks China Glaze Nail Lacquer® in Grape Pop from the Spring 2010 Up & Away Collection on her tips.

The intensely pigmented, deep purple of Grape Pop flatters the multi-talented star’s skin tone and provides a stunningly bold contrast to her fuchsia garments. Celebrity manicurist Cenita Scott topped the rich shade with a coat of China Glaze® Fast Forward Top Coat for a quick dry and high-shine finish.

Skin Care Tips Targeting Breakouts

Everyone wants clear perfect skin, but is there really such a thing as perfect skin? Even when I do everything correctly, I still end up with a blemish here or there but I think I've narrowed down the basics and I have 'perfect' skin for me.

Cleansing Tips
  • Always wash your face before bed, you never want to go to bed with makeup or the day's dirt and grim on your face. Even if you don't wear makeup you should still wash your face before bed.
  • I use a Clarisonic to thoroughly cleanse my skin, but as long as you use a vigorous motion and wash for at least 30-45 seconds you should be ok.
  • Choose the right cleanser for your issues, this is most important. If your skin is oily and you are using a cleanser made for dry skin, that's not going to help you much.
Beat Breakouts
  • Personally, I always pop! Here's the thing, I usually only get whiteheads. Luckily, I very rarely get a big red cystic pimple (keep in mind those you can't pop). Once the whitehead comes to a head, meaning a little white dot I proceed carefully to popping it. Here is how:
  1. Take a nice hot shower first, the heat and steam helps open your pores.
  2. After my pores are open, I wipe my fingers with an alcohol prep pad and then gently place my index fingers on each side of the whitehead and then pull apart my fingers while keeping semi-firm pressure on the skin. My key is too pull apart my fingers instead of pushing them together. If the white goop doesn't come out I don't push it, because that leads to scarring.

  3. If it pops, I use an alcohol pad right on the popped area to clean it more. If it doesn't I use Proactiv Advanced Blemish Treatment overnight and then by the morning it's usually ready.
Keep Dark Spots at bay! Unfortunately, as a woman of color dark spots are hard to avoid sometimes. Even when you don't pop cystic pimples and follow all the skin care rules you can still end up with a dark spot thanks to a pimple. It really sucks! But there's a few things you can do get rid of them.
  • One of my favorite skin care treats is a chemical peel. Chemical peels really help the skin turn over faster which helps get rid of dark spots faster. Now there are at home options that work just as well as Dermatologist treatments.
  • Add a little glycolic acid into your skin care regimen, whether you add a glycolic acid cleanser, serum, or cream in a few months you will see a difference.

Decode Skin Care Advertising

By now, you've probably seen buzzwords like "all natural," "hypoallergenic" and "patented" hundreds of times. But have you ever stopped to ask what they mean?
Beauty companies love terms like these because they suggest concrete benefits that don't have to be backed up by science. In fact, as long as they don't claim to change the body's structure or function, companies don't need FDA approval to market new products to the public and are not required to provide any research to prove their claims. These days, one would almost need a degree in chemistry to understand some of the catch phrases on skin care products. Dr. Channing Barnett is a board certified Manhattan dermatologist who wants to help consumers understand what this frequently used language means.

Gone are the days when simple statements such as "oil free" would suffice. Perhaps the most common phrase is clinical formula. As Dr. Barnett explains, "this has no real meaning. It does not necessarily indicate that the formula was produced in a medical clinic as the manufacturers would have people believe. Clinically tested could very well indicate that the product was tested, but what was it tested for? What were the results? Essentially, this marketing claim is meaningless."

Here are six more commonly misunderstood terms to watch for:

1. "Patented" or "pantent pending"

Patents can be granted to companies that manufacture or combine materials in new ways. But just because something is patented doesn't mean it works.

2. "All natural"

This one really bugs me! It doesn't mean the product is organic or chemical-free. After all, chemicals are "natural," too.

3. "Organic"

The US Department of Agriculture certifies organic food ingredients found in cosmetics, but not essential oils or plants used for cosmetic purposes. To carry the USDA Organic seal, a product must contain at least 95% organic food ingredients (read What Does Organic Really Mean in Skin Products?). Other countries have their own organic certification labels, such as COSMOS and NaTrue in the European Union and NASAA in Australia. Read COSMOS Standardizes Organic Product Labels to learn more.

4. "Hypoallergenic"

Think this guarantees you won't have a reaction? Think again. These products can still contain ingredients some people are allergic to, including preservatives and fragrance.

5. "Fragrance-free"

These products may not have a noticeable smell, but can still contain "masking" scents to cover up ingredients with unpleasant odors. Look for the words "no fragrance added" instead.

6. "Non-comedogenic"

While non-comedogenic products are usually oil-free and therefore less likely to cause breakouts, there's no guarantee they won't. In fact, many contain dimethicone, a known acne aggravator.

7. Helps pre-mature aging."
Perhaps the most appealing of all claims from a consumer standpoint is this statement. If a product truly prevented premature aging by affecting the structure of the skin, it would be classified as a drug and therefore would require FDA approval. Manufactures circumvent this by utilizing the fact that sunscreens prevent premature aging by decreasing the damaging effects of ultraviolet light on the skin. Therefore, if a product contains sunscreen, it may state "prevents premature aging' on the label."

Protect your eyes from UV rays

While most believe that wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses protect eyes from UV rays, it’s not always true. Not all sunglasses block 100 percent of UV rays1 and direct and reflected light can enter from the sides, top and bottom of the glasses. For those who need vision correction, a significant measure of UV protection can be achieved with the addition of UV-blocking contact lenses.

Today, the American Optometric Association Commission on Ophthalmic Standards awarded ACUVUE® ADVANCE® Plus Brand Contact Lenses the Seal of Acceptance for Ultraviolet Absorbing Contact Lenses.

Many contact lens lines do not offer UV protection, and of those that do, not all provide similar absorption levels. Among lens brands, only ACUVUE® brand contact lenses contain UV-blocking agents in every lens, offering the highest level of UV-blocking available - blocking more than 90 percent of UVA rays and 99 percent of UVB rays that reach the lens.

Spring Clean Your Makeup

It's Spring, even though it might not feel like it. You know what that means, Spring Cleaning time! As part of my Spring cleaning I always like to go through my hair care and beauty items and get rid of whatever needs to be discarded.

Setting powders, blush, bronzer, and eye shadows - 2 years
Cream shadows, blushes, and all over cream colors - 12 to 18 months
Liquid Foundation, Cheek stains - 1 year
Lipstick, lipliner, lip gloss - 1 year
Mascara & eyeliners - 3 months

If in doubt do the sniff test! If it smells funny get rid of it. If I have a cold I either don't use lipstick and things and if by chance I do use a lipgloss or balm I just throw it out. I'm not sure if it can harbor germs that might make me sick again, but I don't risk it.

Take the time to clean your makeup bag too, turn it inside out and wipe it down with a baby wipe or a makeup removing cloth.
