Ask the Doc: All about Adult Acne

I thought once I was out of my teenage years, acne would just be a thing of the past, but guess what? It's not and now I have to fight acne, wrinkles, and dull skin?!? This just isn't fair! But guess what? I'm not alone, 50 percent of women report suffering from acne imperfections at some point during their adult life. Here, Dr. Ranella Hirsch, noted Boston dermatologist, explains the facts about adult acne.
Q: What are the causes of adult acne breakouts?
Dr. Hirsch: A top cause of breakouts is using the wrong product or too much of the right product. For example, people with oily skin often overtreat skin, stripping natural oils and yielding more to be produced. One good choice for day-to-day treatment is a product that contains Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide.
Q: Is it true that eating certain fried foods causes my skin to break out?
Dr. Hirsch: No, that is a myth.
Q: Does stress really cause breakouts?
Dr. Hirsch: While stress won’t make you develop acne, it can exacerbate many skin conditions.
Q: I’ haven’t had major breakouts since I was a teen and now all of the sudden I’m having acne flare-ups in my 30’s. What gives?
Dr. Hirsch: During your thirties, there are a lot of lifestyle changes including marriage, pregnancy and career changes. These physical and emotional life stressors can take a toll on your skin, which includes breaking out.

June 10, 2011 9:13 AM I am also studying and researching acne and found out that one of the cause for adult acne, especially for women is hormonal changes.
When you get to thirty, as Dr. Hirsch said, there are all sorts of lifestyle changes, and your hormones are affected by them
One of the causes can be the birth control pills a women takes.
If you aren't taking BC pills and have acne, start taking them. If you are on birth control pills and started to have acne breakouts, stop using them or change the brand.
I wished you had more questions and answers form dr Hirsch.
Thanks
