Winter Proof your Body

It's freezing outside and all you want to do is hop in a super warm bordering on hot shower. Sure, it feels good, but they dry itchy skin that can follow isn't worth it. Opt for a lukewarm shower and keep it quick, get in - get clean - shave - and get out. Sounds easier than it really is. I can't even stick with the guidelines I just use a creamy shower cleanser like Olay Body Wash with Creme Ribbons and follow up with Neutrogena shower Oil to keep my skin moisturized. Then if I'm feeling dry later I always reach for my Curel Itch Defense Lotion.

What do you use on your skin during the winter months?

Beat Dry Winter Skin with a Bath

Bath's are a staple in my beauty regimen, not only are they great for my skin they soothe my soul and relax my body and muscles. In the winter too many hot baths can cause your skin to dry out, but I refuse to give up my bath time so I add bath oils and bath salts infused with oils to my bath water.

(Vanilla Bath Salt, $16.00 SabonNYC.com)

1. Bath Salts - Sabon NYC has my favorite bath salts. The Vanilla Bath Salt is perfect for use during the cold winter months because it's infused with rose petals and oils to prevent dried out skin.

(Jo Malone Bath Oil, $60.00 JoMalone.com)

2. Bath Oil - Jo Malone Bath Oil in Amber & Lavendar is heavenly. I'm telling you a few drops into your bath oil and you'll never want to get out. This oil creates a slight foam while still moisturizing your skin.

Winter Proof Your Face

If you haven't switched over from your summer skin care regimen, I'm sure you're probably having some skin issues and you probably have no idea why. I'm here to tell you ... your summer skin care products just aren't cutting it for winter weather. Since most of your normal cleansers and toners are probably made to get rid of excess oil, they are too strong in the winter because you don't have as much excess oil.

Here are a few tips to avoid skin issues this winter:

1. skip your gel and foam based cleansers instead use a cream based cleanser
2. skip the toner all together, you don't need it
3. layer is not just for your clothes, layer on your moisturizers - serum, moisturizer, and sun block
4. Ditch the heavy duty exfoliator and try a light exfoliator once a week
5. Use a heavy moisturizer at night especially around the sides of your nose and other areas that tend to be dry

Blast Off with CoverGirl

First it was Lash Blast, now we have Lash Blast Luxe, Shine Blast Lip Blast, & Smokey Shadow Blast all by CoverGirl. My favorite of all the blasts has got to be Lip Blast. I just spied some sitting on top of the shelves in CVS and picked up one in Firecracker. The lip gloss has a hint of red color, but it's really sheer. Of course I didn't get it because of the color, I wanted to try it for the shine. The shine is amazing, it's not overly glossy and sticky. Your lips just have great shine and feel conditioned once you apply it. It's my new favorite gloss.
Find it at your local CVS or other drugstore for around $7.00

Combat Winter Skin Issues

As the colder weather aggresively continues to push it's way in my skin starts freaking out, dry patches, peeling, and cracks if I let it go that far. I know I'm not the only one who suffers from winter skin issues so let's address some problems right here.

I'm sure there's some science behind it, but colder weather makes for ashier skin. Which is why me and my brown skin turn to creamier lotions, body butters, and oils. If you find that your 'summer' lotion isn't cutting it the way it used to, don't ditch the lotion. Instead, put it in the back of your beauty arsenal and bring a heavier lotion to the forefront, this way next summer your favorite lotion will be on stand by.

It's been proven that temperature changes + dry skin are a perfect catalyst to speed-up and intensify Eczema flare-ups. Thankfully, I've never suffered with ezcema but I am aware that it is a real medical condition so I suggest you visit your PMD (primary medical doctor) or Dermatologist. (side note: you know I'm a RN and I also happen to be very pro-breast feeding so let me just throw this out there... studies have shown that breast fed babies are less likely to develop eczema.) Bottom line here is if you have eczema pay attention to the changes in your skin, ask your doctor for product recommendations, and keep in mind you might need a different product to tame your flare-ups during the winter months.

I'm a shower and bath junkie, I love spending my me time in a warm bath complete with bubbles, a Lush bath bomb, tons of candles, and a glass of ice water on standby. I go in and stay in, until my fingers and toes look like raisins. During the winter, I tend to use bath oils instead of bubbles and if I have a bubble craving I look for formulas that promise to be moisturizing as well as bubbly. Hot showers are a staple in my life and even though they can dry you out like crazy in the winter, I still have to have them. So I cope by switching to glycerine based soaps, skipping soap all together and using a cream shower cleanser, and being sure to slather every inch of myself in a body oil immediately after.

Coming up this week on Beauty Blvd. I will share with you my favorite products to combat winter skin issues.

New Year - New Nails

When it comes to our nails, we all have complaints. But no worries… you have problems? Shari Gottesman, founder of Perfect Formula has solutions!

My nails won’t grow!

Growing long, strong beautiful nails may seem impossible for some people, but it is actually attainable for anyone. Nails just need the perfect combination of strength and flexibility. That is the concept behind our popular nail strengthener Gel Coat, which is formulated with keratin and calcium to create a protein-rich coating that instantly strengthens, seals and protects natural nails. The key to flexibility is getting enough moisture with a good nail oil. Other factors that can contribute to weak, brittle nails are poor nutrition, nail biting and not wearing gloves, both in the cold, and during tasks like dish washing. I also recommend using crystal nail files, which don’t cause the microscopic tears that lead to splitting and breakage.

Discoloration… it’s not pretty.

There are many causes for yellow nails or minor discoloration from injury, to infection to nutrition to tobacco usage. If you want to have a naked nail look, go for a strengthener or top coat that is formulated with optical brighteners to cancel out the yellow, such as our Pink Gel Coat. Pronounced nail discoloration can signify a serious medical issue, so be sure to see a doctor if you are unsure about whether it is minor discoloration.

Why is it so difficult to find a flattering nail shape for my nails?

This is a common complaint I hear from people who want to do some nail maintenance at home. And that includes almost all of us at one point or another! Here is a fool-proof guide: Long, oval shapes can really elongate short fingers and with bold nail color, this is a very mod, fashion forward style. The short and square look is great for most people, but it is especially flattering on long sinewy fingers, and perfect for people who like dark, dramatic nail colors. Short to mid-length oval shapes are pretty much universal and fool proof for anyone and go great with just about any nail look from all-natural to bold and colorful.

Ridges – how on earth does this happen?

According to the Mayo Clinic, vertical ridges are increasingly common as you age and are not cause for concern. There are a few things that can mitigate this. A good buffer is in order to help smooth out the surface. I am against buffing any layers off the nail for normal nail maintenance because I believe you need all layers in tact if you want long, strong nails, but this is one instance where some buffing can be useful to help even out the surface. There are some effective ridge filling nail formulas out there, but alternately, you can just add a few extra coats of regular nail polish, which will also help to fill in ridges.
Why am I living in dry cuticle and hang nail town?
Dry cuticles and hang nails are a common annoyance to a fair number of us, but this is an easy one. Moisturize with a really good nail oil frequently – at east twice a day. It couldn’t be an easier thing to do, while you’re on the phone or winding down in front of the TV. And you should never cut your cuticles – save your cuticle cutter for those troublesome hang-nails!
Thin is usually good. Except when it comes to nails!
Thin nails need lots of extra strength. Find a strengthening base-coat with keratin and calcium, like Perfect Formula Gel Coat, and be sure to reapply every week. Biotin supplements are often recommended for stronger nails, but there is no substitute for a healthy diet and drinking lots of water.
