Happy Halloween!

I hope you have a grea Halloween, while I'm stuck at work! Don't eat too much candy! Really, I mean it! Think about your teeth and your health. Did you know that there are approximately four teaspoons of sugar in a Milky Way candy bar? Worse yet, a pack of Starburst fruit chews contains about eight teaspoons of sugar and a bag of Skittles has about 11! Have you ever wondered about the effects that might have on your teeth?

Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans, one of the nation’s leading cosmetic dentists, has some practical tips to minimize the damage this year:

Can’t brush right away? Swish water around your mouth for 30 seconds; even this minor effort helps remove bacteria from the mouth, while helping to ward off stains until your next brushing.

FLOSS, FLOSS, FLOSS! Cleaning in between is a tried and true way of dislodging the stickiest of sweets.

Already succumbed to years of indulgence? Not to fret. Proactively carving out time for regular, professional teeth cleaning is essential for oral health. Dr. Golub-Evans recommends a visit every six months, especially if you have had a lot of dental work done in the past.

It’s not all bad news… chocolate actually may keep cavities at bay: while chocolate does contain sugar, it also contains good-for-you ingredients that help prevent tooth decay. In fact, the cocoa bean husk has an anti-bacterial effect on the mouth and can fight effectively against plaque and other damaging agents.
