Post-Pregnancy Body Issues: Stretch Marks
Dr. Nina Naidu answers one of the most asked pregnancy questions. Is there anything that can be done surgically or with lasers to treat stretch marks?
Here is her answer: To explain why stretch marks are such a difficult problem, we need to look at the structure of the skin. The epidermis, or outermost layer, is a translucent substance that regenerates itself every six weeks. Stretch marks, however, form in the skin’s second layer, or dermis, secondary to tears in the elastin fibers. There is simply nothing we can do to make the body regenerate these torn fibers, which is why lasers and creams are minimally effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks. We can improve the appearance of the epidermis, however, which is what is targeted with creams and lasers. The most effective way of
eliminating stretch marks is to remove them by performing a tummy tuck. There are a number of topicals which have been used for the prevention of stretch marks, but to my knowledge no studies have ever proven that these work.
A few of my friends have had babies and the one's that used some type of body butter, body cream, or body oil have no stretch marks. Even my friend that was around 100 pounds pre-pregnancy and gained upwards of 30 pounds (all belly) didn't get any stretch marks. When I asked her what her secret was she told me that she applied body oils and body creams at least three times a day to her belly... religiously.
